Ring Dog Rescue is a Richmond-based non-profit organization devoted to the welfare of purebred and mixed-breed American Staffordshire Terriers, American Pit Bull Terriers, Bull Terriers, Mastiffs, and Bulldogs, affectionately known as “bullies.” Our dual purpose is to find homes for adoptable bullies scheduled for euthanasia in metro-Richmond shelters, and to educate owners and the public about them. In doing so, we seek to integrate rescued bullies into families and communities as companion dogs, thereby reducing the disproportionately large number of them euthanized at local shelters and killed in dog fighting rings each year. Ring Dog Rescue works primarily with local shelters in the metropolitan Richmond area, taking adoptable bullies scheduled for euthanasia into our temporary custody and placing them in our network of foster homes where they are cared for and socialized prior to adoption. All potential Ring Dogs are temperament tested before they are taken into the organization’s custody, and while dogs with severe, treatable, medical conditions are candidates, those that demonstrate aggression towards people and other animals are not. All Ring Dogs are socialized with kids, pets, and neighbors within their foster homes, so as to equip them with the skills necessary to become responsible members of their future families and communities. While in the organization’s custody, every Ring Dog is provided with full medical care, and foster parents are encouraged to certify their bullies as canine good citizens. All potential owners are subject to a rigorous background check prior to adoption, and in signing the adoption contract they must agree to uphold the organization’s mission. Ring Dog Rescue has no paid staff, but instead relies entirely on volunteers who are involved in every aspect of the organization from fostering to fundraising. Therefore, all of the money raised on our behalf is put towards the care of our dogs and to fund education initiatives including community-based spay/neuter clinics, our Popsicle’s for Pups program, National Pit Bull Awareness Day events, and the End Dogfighting campaign in Richmond. Since our founding in February 2007, Ring Dog Rescue has adopted out more than 400 healthy dogs into responsible, loving, permanent homes, and this past year (2011) we successfully placed 160 bullies! Ring Dog Rescue is one of the founding members of Richmond Metro Pet Savers (www.metrorichmondpetsavers.com), and with your contributions, we will continue to provide and expand our services, and develop new programs and initiatives, for the betterment of bully lives.
